Key takeaways
  • Summer highs average 92–96°F (June–August); pack for real heat, not just warm weather.
  • Winter is mild, with highs in the 60s and lows in the low 40s, but bring layers.
  • Comfortable walking shoes matter most: you'll be on River Walk stone and mission grounds.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle; the missions don't sell plastic bottles but have refill stations.
  • May and September–October are the wettest months; take flash-flood warnings seriously.

San Antonio packing comes down to three things: heat, walking and the occasional downpour. The city is casual, so you don't need much dressy clothing. What matters is shoes you can walk in all day, real sun protection for most of the year, and a light layer for cool mornings and air-conditioned museums.

The averages below are NOAA's official 1991–2020 climate normals for San Antonio International Airport, so you can pack for the month you're actually visiting.

Spring (March–May)

Spring is pleasant early, then warms fast. By May, highs average in the upper 80s, and May is the wettest month of the year. Pack short sleeves plus one light layer for evenings, a compact umbrella or rain jacket, and sunscreen. If you're coming for Fiesta in April, see the Fiesta section below.

Summer (June–August)

This is the hardest season to pack for. August highs average 96°F, and even overnight lows stay in the mid-70s. Bring loose, breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and a refillable bottle. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning or evening. The Alamo notes that it gets very hot in summer and that most of the site is outdoors. The Mission Reach trail has little shade, so the park service tells cyclists and walkers to always carry water.

Fall (September–November)

September still feels like summer, with highs around 90°F. October cools into the low 80s, and November is comfortable. September and October are also among the wettest months, so pack rain gear along with your summer clothes. A light jacket is useful by November evenings.

Winter (December–February)

Winters are mild. Highs average in the mid-60s and lows in the low 40s, and those are averages, so some days run colder. Bring layers: long sleeves, a sweater or fleece, and a medium jacket. You'll want to peel off a layer by afternoon.

Shoes: the one thing not to get wrong

You'll walk more than you expect. The River Walk loop, Alamo Plaza, Market Square and Pearl are all best on foot, and the missions have uneven ground. The National Park Service warns that surfaces at the mission sites are uneven and doorway heights vary. The Alamo also recommends comfortable shoes.

  • Bring: broken-in sneakers or supportive walking sandals.
  • Consider: a second pair, so you can swap if one gets wet or rubs.
  • Skip: new shoes, slick soles and heels for daytime sightseeing.

Sun and heat essentials

  • Sunscreen and a hat. The Alamo's visiting tips list both, along with bug spray and water. GO RIO suggests sunglasses and a hat for river cruises.
  • Reusable water bottle. The missions don't sell single-use plastic water bottles, but every mission site and the Visitor Center at Mission San José has a refill station.
  • Bug spray, especially for evenings by the river and outdoor sites.
  • A light layer for indoors. Restaurants and museums are often heavily air-conditioned, even in summer (a common experience, not an official rule).
Local tip

Bring a small cross-body bag rather than a big backpack. The San Antonio Museum of Art doesn't allow backpacks in its galleries (you check them at the front desk), and a small bag is easier in crowds.

Dressing for the Alamo and the mission churches

San Antonio's historic sites are casual, but a few rules affect what you wear.

  • The Alamo asks guests to remove hats inside the historic church and prohibits clothing with obscene or offensive language. See the Alamo's site rules.
  • The four mission churches at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park are active Catholic parishes. The park asks visitors to remove hats, stay quiet and avoid photographing worshippers. Weddings, baptisms and funerals happen often, and the churches may be closed to visitors during services.
Good to know

The parks don't publish a formal dress code, but because these are working churches, many visitors bring a light layer to cover bare shoulders out of respect. It's a courtesy, not a rule. Pick a hat that's easy to take off and carry.

Packing for Fiesta

Fiesta San Antonio 2027 runs April 15–25, 2027 (11 days), and 2028 is April 20–30. The official Fiesta FAQ says it's "all about color": guayabera shirts are popular for men, and embroidered tops and dresses for women. Over-the-top hats are part of the fun. So are decorated but comfortable shoes, because parade-goers famously shout "Show me your shoes!"

  • Pack your most colorful outfit, or plan to buy something local when you arrive.
  • Bring comfortable shoes for parades and crowds; you'll stand for a long time.
  • Fiesta medals are popular souvenirs. Official medals and merchandise are sold through the Fiesta Commission's merch page and its listed retailers. Bring a hat or lanyard if you plan to wear a few.

Rain and flash floods

Rain here isn't constant, but it can be serious when it comes. The National Weather Service office for Austin/San Antonio says South Central Texas is commonly called "Flash Flood Alley." It also says flash flooding is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the region.

  • Pack a compact umbrella or packable rain jacket, especially in May, September and October.
  • Never drive or walk into floodwater. The NWS says six inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult over, and 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars. Its slogan is "Turn Around Don't Drown®."
  • Expect weather changes to your plans. GO RIO notes that rain may cancel river cruises, and the Mission Reach Hike and Bike Trail can close temporarily during high water.
Good to know

Turn on emergency alerts on your phone before you travel, and check the forecast each morning. If a flash flood warning is issued, skip low-lying trails and low-water crossings.
