- A 35-minute Go Rio cruise is the easiest first-day win, and tickets aren't tied to a time slot.
- The Alamo Church is free but needs a reservation; the $48 guided tour adds the exhibit and AR experience.
- The missions are free to visit on your own; book a tour or bike ride if you don't have a car.
- Ghost tours run rain or shine and most last 1.5 to 2.5 hours, so they slot easily after dinner.
- Hill Country wine day trips are 21+ and small-group, so book a few weeks ahead.
San Antonio is an easy city to see on your own: the River Walk is free, the Alamo Church is free, and the four missions in the national park don't charge admission either. So the question isn't "do I need a tour?" It's "where does a guide, a boat or a van actually make the day better?"
This list covers the ones we think earn their price: a short river cruise for orientation, a proper Alamo tour, two ways to see the missions, a food walk, two ghost tours, Hill Country wine and a cavern trip. We only list tours whose pages we checked in October 2026. Prices and schedules change, so confirm on the listing before you book.

How to choose the right tour
Start with what you can't easily do yourself.
- No car? Book the missions. The first one, Mission Concepción, is about 3 miles south of downtown, and each mission is about 2.5 to 3 miles from the next, according to the National Park Service. A van tour or a guided bike ride solves the logistics.
- Short on time? Do the 35-minute Go Rio cruise on day one. It's the fastest way to get your bearings on the River Walk.
- Traveling with kids? The Alamo's Young Texans Tour and Natural Bridge Caverns both work well. Note that the ghost bus doesn't allow children 8 and under.
- Here for food or wine? One downtown food walk plus a Hill Country wine day makes a good pairing over a long weekend.
- Want a night out? A ghost walk fits neatly after dinner and doesn't take the whole evening.
Planning a full trip around these? Our 3-day itinerary shows how to fit them together.
River & downtown
Go Rio Narrated River Cruise
Go Rio's electric barges run 35-minute narrated cruises from La Villita past Old Mill Crossing, Selena's Bridge and the Briscoe Western Art Museum. English tours run daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for most of the year. You can board at three docks: Rivercenter, Historia and Aztec.
The best part is the flexibility. Tickets aren't tied to a date or time, and boats leave about every 15 minutes, so you can ride whenever the light looks good. Go Rio says the barges are ADA-accessible. Keep in mind that rain can cancel cruises and the company doesn't give refunds, so check the sky before you buy. Skip it if you'd rather walk the river at your own pace. Pair it with our River Walk guide.
Buy Go Rio tickets online or at any dock booth through Go Rio's narrated tours page. Planning several big attractions? San Antonio CityPASS includes a Go Rio cruise.
History: the Alamo & the missions
Remember the Alamo Guided Tour
You can walk into the Alamo Church for free, but you need a reservation. The Alamo's own Remember the Alamo Guided Tour costs about $48 for adults and $38 for kids 12 and under (as of October 2026). It covers the Battle of the Alamo on the ground and includes entry to the Church, the Alamo Exhibit with the Phil Collins Collection, and Surrounded! The Alamo Augmented Experience.
If that's more than you need, the self-guided A Line in the Sand experience with an audio tour costs about $20 for adults and $18 for kids. The Alamo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and closed Christmas Day. For more, see our Alamo & missions guide.
Reserve the guided tour, the free Church ticket, or both on the Alamo's tours and experiences page.
World Heritage Historic Missions Tour
This small-group tour (10 people max) takes 4.5 hours. It stops at Mission Concepción, gets to Mission San José in time for the 10 a.m. park ranger tour, then visits Mission San Juan, the Espada Aqueduct and Mission Espada. Transport, a guide and bottled water are included, and it costs from $69 (as of October 2026). It meets at the northwest corner of La Villita.
The listing says it isn't suitable for children under 8 or wheelchair users. If you have a car, you can do this route on your own for free. Ranger programs run daily at 10 and 11 a.m. at Mission San José, per NPS.
Three Missions Bike Tour (Cycling San Antonio)
If you'd like some exercise, Cycling San Antonio's 5-hour Three Missions ride goes from the Alamo through the King William district and down the river trail to Missions Concepción and San José. It costs $85 per person and includes the bike, helmet, water bottle and a light snack. Strong riders can take the 7-hour Grand Tour ($125), which reaches all five mission sites.
You book by email or phone, not with an instant checkout, and solo riders pay a $10 surcharge. Go in the cooler months. NPS warns that summer temperatures often go above 103°F.
Food & night tours
Food Tour with Tacos, BBQ & Tex-Mex Classics
Secret Food Tours' 3-hour walk starts at Historic Market Square, across from Mi Tierra. It begins with a taco on a handmade tortilla, moves through downtown for a bean burger, stops on the River Walk for Texas BBQ, and ends near the Alamo with sorbet or gelato. There's also a "secret dish." It costs from $108 (as of October 2026).
Come hungry and wear good shoes. Tell the company about dietary needs ahead of time. The listing has conflicting accessibility notes, so ask the operator if mobility is a concern. Want to explore on your own afterward? Our food guide picks up from here.
Ghosts and True Crime Guided Walking Tour
This 1.5-hour evening walk starts at Pinkerton's Barbecue and passes the Spanish Governor's Palace, San Fernando Cathedral, the Majestic Theatre, the Menger and the Emily Morgan. It mixes ghost stories with real crime history. It runs rain or shine and costs from $32 (as of October 2026), which makes it the best-value night out on this list.
San Antonio Ghost Bus Tour
Sisters Grimm's 2.5-hour bus tour leaves from their Oddities Parlor at the Menger Hotel. It includes stops at the Menger and a walk inside what the operator calls the city's most historic cemetery. It costs from $60 (as of October 2026). Because of adult content it's recommended for ages 13+, and children 8 and under aren't allowed.
Most GetYourGuide listings here offer free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Natural Bridge Caverns needs 3 days' notice. Check the terms on each listing before you pay.
Day trips: Hill Country wine & caverns
Cottonwood Wine Tours: Fredericksburg
Cottonwood runs two very similar Fredericksburg trips, each around $179 per person (as of October 2026):
- Taste of Fredericksburg (Viator): 6 to 7 hours, small group (10 max), 21+. It leaves at 10 a.m. from La Villita Assembly Hall, with tastings at Sister Creek Vineyards and Texas Wine Collective plus about 90 minutes in Fredericksburg. Lunch isn't included.
- Fredericksburg Wineries Day Trip (GetYourGuide): 6.5 hours with the same two wineries and free time in town. Pickup from downtown and Riverwalk-area hotels is included.
Choose the GetYourGuide version if you want hotel pickup. Either way, book early. Viator notes the tour is usually booked about 27 days in advance. Skip it if you'd rather spend your time in town than tasting wine.
Natural Bridge Caverns Discovery Tour
The 1-hour guided Discovery Tour covers about half a mile of the largest show cavern in Texas, going 180 feet underground, with roughly ¾ mile of walking including stairs. It stays around 70°F inside, with 99% humidity. It costs from $28 (as of October 2026). Wear shoes with good grip on wet surfaces. It isn't a good fit for anyone with claustrophobia, vertigo or limited mobility.
Visiting in summer? Plan the missions or the Alamo for the morning and the caverns for the afternoon. Being underground is the best way to beat the heat.
Tips before you book
- Book timed things first. The Alamo Church, the guided Alamo tour and small-group day trips have limited space. Go Rio doesn't, so you can leave it for last.
- Check the meeting point. Several tours meet at La Villita, others at Market Square or the Menger. Our where to stay guide shows what's within walking distance.
- Watch the weather. Go Rio may stop service in bad weather, the missions van tour needs good weather, and the ghost walks go ahead regardless.
- Bring water and sun protection for anything outdoors. Our packing list has the details.
FAQ
What's the one tour to do if I only have a day?
The Go Rio cruise. It takes 35 minutes, you don't need a reservation, and it gives you your bearings on the River Walk. Then reserve a free Alamo Church ticket for the same day.
Do I need a tour to see the San Antonio missions?
No. Entry to San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is free, and rangers lead programs daily at Mission San José. A tour is mainly worth it if you don't have a car or want a guide's background.
Are San Antonio ghost tours good for kids?
It depends on the tour. The ghost bus doesn't allow children 8 and under and recommends ages 13+. Walking tours like Ghosts and True Crime are gentler, but read the listing before booking for younger kids.
How far ahead should I book a Hill Country wine tour?
A few weeks if you can. These tours cap groups at about 10 people, and Viator says the Taste of Fredericksburg tour is typically booked around 27 days ahead.
Is San Antonio CityPASS worth it?
If you'll visit several of its attractions, it can be. The Alamo lists CityPASS at $63 for adults and $53 for kids 3 to 11 (as of October 2026). It covers four attractions over nine days, including the Alamo Exhibit and a Go Rio cruise.
