Key takeaways
  • All ten displays below are free to see. Some homeowners accept donations, but none charge admission.
  • They cluster on the north and northeast side: Converse, Live Oak, Schertz, Selma, Castle Hills, Stone Oak and northeast San Antonio.
  • Hours come from the homeowners' own listings. Most run nightly through Oct. 31, and a few open only certain nights.
  • Casket Hills in Castle Hills opens just Oct. 29–31, and We Scare Because We Care in Selma is open on Halloween night only.
  • Go after dark, park legally, stay on the sidewalk and keep the volume down. These are people's homes.

Some of the best Halloween in San Antonio isn't behind a ticket booth. It's in front yards: 12-foot inflatables, skeleton horses pulling hearses, fog, projections and whole graveyards built by neighbors who start planning in July. We spent last Saturday night driving past decorated houses in New Braunfels, and it was so much fun I went looking for the best free ones closer to home.

These ten are all free, and all on the north and northeast side, so you can link several into one evening drive. Hours are what each homeowner posted, and plans can change night to night, so don't be surprised if the lights are off when you roll up.

Local tip

Casket Hills is a Castle Hills family's home turned into a free, family-friendly walk-through haunted house, and it's only open the last three nights of October. Put it on Thursday or Friday to dodge the Halloween-night crowd.

A northeast loop for one evening

  1. Start in Converse at Northampton Haunted House on Manderly Place.
  2. Head north to Live Oak for the animatronics on Turkey Tree.
  3. Finish in Schertz, where Lil Boo's Graveyard Games is on Wild Cherry and two houses face each other on Wayward Pass. Walker Cementary is open Friday through Sunday.

If you're on the north-central side instead, pair Wayside Cemetery 1842 with Casket Hills, which are only a few minutes apart, and save Stone Oak for its own trip up 281.

How to be a good guest

  • Go after dark. Most displays light up around 6 or 7 p.m.
  • Park legally and never block driveways or mailboxes. On busy nights, park a block away and walk.
  • Stay on the sidewalk unless the owners invite you in. Some displays are walk-through, most are look-from-the-street.
  • Drop a donation if there's a jar or QR code. Fog juice and electric bills add up.
  • Bring a flashlight for little ones and watch for kids crossing the street.
  • Check the weather. Friday, Oct. 30 has the best chance of rain this week, and outdoor displays may stay dark in a storm. See our rainy-day plan.
Good to know

These are private homes, and the hours come from listings the owners posted themselves. A display can close early, skip a night or wrap up for the season without notice.
